Intense thunderstorms set to drench Merseyside as Met Office issue weather warning

The Met Office has issued a thunderstorm weather warning with heavy rain expected tonight.

A yellow warning for thunderstorms is in place from 1pm to 9pm today for Merseyside .

It comes after a Bank Holiday heatwave , which saw temperatures soar to a warm 24C.

The Met Office expect the thunderstorms may bring some temporary disruption to travel and power supplies.

There could also be possible damage to a few buildings and structures from lightning strikes and some short term loss of power.

There is also a good chance that driving conditions will be affected by spray, standing water and/or hail, leading to longer journey times by car and bus.

Flooding could also affect homes and businesses.

The Met Office said: "Although not everywhere will get one, heavy showers and thunderstorms are expected to break out across central and northern England during Wednesday afternoon, easing from the south during the evening.

"These thunderstorms bring the potential for lightning strikes and hail, with sudden downpours and gusty winds."
