Intense rain warning after monsoon covers entire North East

GUWAHATI: After hitting parts of northeast on Thursday, the southwest monsoon covered the entire region on Friday along with some parts of sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim.

The IMD has warned that there will be “intense spells of rainfall over northeast India and sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim during the next five days.”

In last 24 hours, isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall occurred over Assam and Meghalaya and heavy rainfall over Arunachal Pradesh.

IMD has warned on Saturday that there is likelihood of light to moderate rainfall at most places with isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall and thunderstorm with lightning at isolated places in Arunachal Pradesh, while light to moderate rainfall at most places with isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall in Assam and extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places over Meghalaya. The department has also warned of light to moderate rainfall at most places with isolated heavy rainfall over Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura on Saturday.

The department has listed possible impact over the region, which include poor visibility due to intense spell of rainfall leading to traffic congestion, temporary disruption of traffic due to waterlogging in roads or uprooting of trees leading to increased travel time, waterlogging and flooding in many parts of low-lying areas and river banks, partial damage to kutcha houses and huts, landslides, mudslide, landslips very likely, possibility of damage to vulnerable structures due to heavy rainfall, likely damage of crops in the maturity stage and even possibility of injury to people and cattle at open place due to lightning.
