'Intense' flooding causes traffic chaos in Lanarkshire town

Flooding issues caused by "intense" weather has sparked traffic chaos in Lanark this week.

Motorists were met with numerous disruptions yesterday morning with a number of diversions having to be put in place.

A burst pipe in the Wellgate area on Saturday, August 7 appears to have been what started the flooding, meanwhile Lanarkshire was hit with thunderstorms over the weekend.

That led to planned repairs of the water main, but road traffic management has had to be introduced - with temporary traffic lights now place in several areas.

Scottish Water have since been dealing with the issues, supported by South Lanarkshire Council.

Other surrounding streets with road disruptions are Hyndford Road and Hope Street.

A Scottish Water spokesman told Lanarkshire Live : “The repair to an 18 inch water main which burst in Wellgate, South Lanarkshire on August 7 is currently being planned.

"The burst was isolated and water was redirected from other areas of the network to help minimise disruption and return normal supplies for customers.

“This is a complex repair given that other services are located in close proximity to the main. The repair will be carried out as soon as it is possible to do so.

"This work is not expected to interrupt normal supplies for customers. Road traffic management is in operation on Hyndford Road and Hope Street.

"We apologise to local residents and road users for any inconvenience caused and thank them for their patience and understanding."

Lanarkshire recently experienced a sweltering heatwave which brought a lot of dry weather throughout July.

But the subsequent thunderstorms and heavy rain have brought a "challenging time" says South Lanarkshire Council.

The council's Head of Roads and Transportation Colin Park said: “Scottish Water are responding to multiple incidents on their network within the town at Wellgate, Hyndford Road and Hope Street.

“The dry weather over the past few months and the intense thunderstorms over the past few days has caused various issues across the network with subsequent road closures and increased numbers of temporary traffic signals.

“We are in daily contact with Scottish Water who are endeavouring to carry out repairs as soon as possible.

“We apologise for any inconvenience and ask for your patience at this challenging time.”
