'Intelligent and patient' - Kalvin Phillips earns national plaudits after England run riot

Kalvin Phillips showed no signs of slowing down as he continues to impress in an England shirt.

The Leeds United midfielder was once again the heartbeat of the Three Lions' midfield as they beat Ukraine 4-0 to set up a Euro 2020 semi-final with Denmark on Wednesday.

Phillips negotiated 65 minutes without picking up a booking before Gareth Southgate opted to save the midfielder, knowing a yellow card would have ruled him out of the last four tie.

It was a historic win for England as they registered secured a seventh-consecutive clean sheet for the first time in their history, which is in no small part thanks to the protection they've had in front of their defence.

With that in mind, LeedsLive has gathered the Phillips' ratings across the national titles.

The Express - 7

Usual energetic display tidying up whenever England lost possession. And avoided the yellow card.

The Telegraph - 7

Intelligent and patient presence in midfield. Not as adventurous in attack as in previous matches but there was no need for him to bomb forward.

The Mail - 7.5

Didn't see much of the ball but his energy in central midfield was key for England. Knew he couldn't come steaming out of the box due to the weather but showed maturity in tough conditions.

The Guardian - 8

He had to be disciplined when Ukraine started to stroke the ball around midfield. Avoided picking up a booking that would have brought a suspension.

The Independent - 7

With Rice, provided the platform for the performance. A little suspect defensively at times, as Ukraine enjoyed space down his side during the first half, but recovered to control.

The Sun - 7

Looking more assured with every game at this level. No need for physicality as his intelligence did the trick covering the space in this game – even when playing alone at the base once Henderson had replaced Rice. 7

Sky Sports - 6

Tournament high point remains that display against Croatia, but neat and tidy again in possession and showed great discipline without it. One of three England players simultaneously subbed for a rest - and, in Phillips' case, suspension protection - with half an hour on the clock.
