U.S. intelligence chiefs told the Senate Intelligence Committee on Tuesday that the Islamic State, or ISIS, "still commands thousands of fighters in Iraq and Syria, and it maintains eight branches, more than a dozen networks, and thousands of dispersed supporters around the world."
Why it matters: Earlier this month, Vice President Mike Pence said in a speech that "ISIS has been defeated" just an hour after four American service members were killed in an explosion in Syria for which ISIS later claimed responsibility.
