Intel has revealed it's plans to dominate the mobile CPU space with a mass of 12th Gen laptop CPUs that use it's 'Alder Lake' hybrid core design with up to 14 cores and 5GHz frequencies with the flagship Core i9-12900HK.
The Alder Lake hybrid core design that's received rave reviews in desktop PCs is used here to offer up to a claimed 28 percent gaming performance boost compared to 11th Gen CPUs, while offering Thunderbolt 4 and DDR5 support
Alder Lake and its hybrid core design will, according to Intel, benefit laptop performance the most, despite it launching on the desktop first with CPUs such as the superb Core i5-12600K.
Interestingly, the company has opted for a very different approach to its new 12th Gen desktop CPUs also announced today, with far more including smaller and less power hungry E-cores (efficient cores).
For example, the mobile Core i5-12600H has four P-cores (performance cores) and eight E-cores, while the desktop Core i5-12600 has six performance cores. You get E-cores all the way down the stack too with the low power mobile Core i3-1215U having two P-cores and four E-cores. It will be interesting to see how much better mobile performance is as a result.
Intel also announced the 3rd generation of its Project Athena specification, now known as Evo. This minimum specification has been updated to include 12th Gen CPUs, Intel WiFi 6E and a Windows-based connectivity performance suite that performs dynamic WiFi connection and traffic optimization, with previous requirements highlighted above.
