InTek Logistics: An Intermodal Specialist Model for a Structurally Constrained Freight Era

(Credit: Rick LaGore)

Long before regulatory pressure began reshaping North American trucking capacity, InTek Logistics had already made a strategic decision that would define its trajectory for the next two decades. CEO, Rick LaGore, explains that intermodal was not adopted as a tactical response to market cycles, but established as the company's core operating model years ahead of its broader industry recognition.

LaGore notes that the organization's commitment to intermodal logistics emerged from a deliberate repositioning of the business in 2016, culminating in a focused identity shift. He explains, "We made a specific decision, and we changed our name from InTek Freight Logistics to InTek Logistics as proof of that dedication, and 95 percent of our business is intermodal." That concentration, he adds, reflects a conviction that specialization creates deeper expertise and more consistent outcomes for customers navigating complex freight environments.

According to LaGore, this long-term positioning now intersects with a rapidly evolving regulatory landscape that is tightening trucking capacity across the United States. He says, "Enforcement activity led by the FMCSA has intensified scrutiny across carrier compliance, licensing integrity, and operational standards, contributing to tightening truckload capacity and upward pressure on rates." LaGore emphasizes that these changes have accelerated structural cost pressures across truckload markets while reducing predictability in service availability.

Within this environment, LaGore believes InTek Logistics' early emphasis on intermodal has gained renewed relevance. He explains that the company's approach was shaped by a recognition that market conditions would eventually reward modal diversification and disciplined execution.

A defining feature of InTek Logistics' positioning, according to LaGore, is its emphasis on education as a core component of client engagement. Rather than focusing on transactional freight execution alone, LaGore believes in a model built around guidance, operational clarity, and long-term capability building.

This educational approach, he adds, is reinforced by the company's operational structure. LaGore emphasizes that clients interact directly with senior leadership rather than layers of sales representation. "We do not have salespeople," he explains. "When customers approach us, they are talking with the leaders of the company, so they are either talking with Shelli Austin, who has been my business partner for almost 30 years, or me." This structure, he suggests, creates continuity of knowledge and a higher degree of alignment between strategic intent and operational execution.

LaGore also underscores the importance of experience across both enterprise-scale environments and specialized logistics execution. His background spans large organizations, where he developed an early understanding of operational scale and financial discipline. He recalls a formative shift from financial analysis to operational leadership, driven by a desire to engage directly with execution rather than observation. He believes that transition ultimately shaped his perspective on supply chain efficiency and cost optimization.

The origin of InTek Logistics itself is rooted in this operational evolution. LaGore recalls identifying a structural inefficiency while managing warehouse operations in the Midwest, where he observed that transportation challenges were limiting broader supply chain performance. His proposal to build a dedicated transportation capability led to early freight operations supporting major enterprise customers, and eventually evolved into a standalone logistics platform.

Following industry restructuring in 2007, LaGore and his leadership team repositioned the business with a long-term focus on sustainability and specialization. "We needed to be something different," he explains, noting that intermodal offered a pathway to build a resilient model aligned with evolving freight economics rather than short-term market cycles. That decision has since become foundational to the company's identity and operational focus.

Today, InTek Logistics operates with intermodal as its primary modality, reflecting LaGore's view that market conditions have structurally shifted in favor of rail-based long-haul solutions. He refers to intermodal as increasingly central to freight strategy in an environment where truckload capacity is constrained by regulatory enforcement and workforce attrition. However, he also emphasizes that successful adoption requires education, planning, discipline, and operational alignment.

LaGore explains that many shippers approach intermodal with an incomplete context, often shaped by legacy experiences or limited exposure. In response, InTek Logistics focuses on bridging the execution gap by guiding clients through planning considerations such as transit variability, load preparation, and network coordination. He notes that intermodal operates as a truck-like service rather than a direct replacement, requiring adjusted expectations and process discipline.

LaGore highlights technical considerations such as blocking and bracing within containers, where proper load securement reduces risk associated with rail vibration patterns that differ from road transport. These operational details, he argues, are essential to achieving consistent service outcomes and reinforcing confidence in modal transition.

According to LaGore, as regulatory pressure continues to reshape trucking capacity, the role of specialized intermodal providers will become increasingly important. He frames the current environment as one defined by structural constraint rather than cyclical fluctuation, where capacity reductions are less likely to reverse in full as market conditions normalize. In this context, he positions InTek Logistics as a partner designed to reduce complexity and guide decision-making through transition.
