Meiji Yasuda Life Insurance Company plans to strengthen its sales system by increasing the number of sales staffers and offices, the insurer's President Akio Negishi said in a recent interview with The Yomiuri Shimbun.

The company is aiming to add 4,000 sales employees over the next 10 years to boost the total to 40,000. The number of sales offices will also be increased by 200 to about 1,200, ir order to strengthen cooperation with local communities and provide better health promotion services.

Although life insurance companies have been promoting digitization amid the coronavirus crisis, Negishi said: "The quantity and quality of our sales staff is the source of our growth. Through our sales staff, we'd like to do such things as promoting the health of our customers."

Meanwhile, there are currently 13,000 employees who are not working in sales. The company will trim that number to 10,000 over 10 years.

By reducing the workload through digitization and raising the retirement age from the current 65 to 70, the company intends to effectively utilize its human resources' experience and knowledge.
