Insurance firm Granite Underwriting announces more than 300 new jobs for Merseyside

A firm offering specialist motor insurance for taxi drivers has announced plans for more than 300 new jobs on Merseyside .

Granite Underwriting made the announcement about the significant expansion on Friday, with the hundreds of new employees to be hired for both it and its direct insurance subsidiary firm, Acorn.

Alan Keating, CEO and co-founder, said: “I am pleased by the rapid pace at which our business continues to grow, underpinned by our ambitious expansion plans.

"I look forward to welcoming more highly capable people to the team as we continue our exciting growth journey."

Established in 1982, Granite consists of a number of brands, and distributes "specialist" motor insurance for drivers of private hire taxis, black cabs, Uber and other large operators.

The firm's headquarters are in Formby, although the jobs will be located at its city centre site in Mersey Chambers, Covent Garden.

The firm, which underwrote over £220m in 2017, said it's expanding across a "range of functions" that include underwriting, actuarial, customer service, claims handling and HR.

In January 2019, Inflexion Private Equity acquired a minority shareholding in the business, which is now implementing an "ambitious growth strategy" as it seeks to grow its market share.

Granite also recently appointed Jonathon Rhydderch as underwriting director, David Greaves as schemes and trading director and Steve Asthon as non-executive chairman.

Mr Ashton said: “I am very pleased to have assumed the role of non-executive Chair at Granite and I look forward to working closely with Alan and the team to support the company’s ambitious growth plans.”
