Insulation foam and tin cans: The latest fly-tipping at 'blackspot' entrance to Woodthorpe Park

Pictures have revealed more than a dozen bags of rubbish dumped at the wooded entrance to Woodthorpe Park which is described as a 'blackspot' by volunteers.

Paul Swift, 60, vice-chairman of the Friends of Woodthorpe Park voluntary group, discovered the mess last Saturday (November 2).

More than a dozen bags of industrial and domestic waste were left near the entrance from Sherwood Vale. The items dumped included insulation foam.

"It looked like aluminium cans, bottles - sorts of things you throw away, items that can't be recycled," said Mr Swift, of Sherwood Vale, who works for the University of Nottingham.

He said the area was popular with dog walkers but explained fly-tipping had been a problem there for years.

"It's a black spot. It's known for its flytipping. Just because it's so dark, you can get away with it," said Mr Swift. "It is an eyesore. It has happened so often.

"You can bet by the time it's cleared up, give it a few weeks or a month or two there will be more rubbish. It's an ongoing problem in that area."

A spokesman for Nottingham City Council said the authority was carrying out an investigation in a bid to take action against people responsible.

The authority confirmed on Wednesday afternoon (November 6) the mess would be cleared that day.

A statement accompanying the photos read: "The dark nights have returned and so has the fly-tipper.

"See the attached photographs of fly-tipped domestic, garden and industrial waste dumped at the wooded entrance to Woodthorpe Park on Sherwood Vale and at the junction of Winchester Street and Chestnut Walk."

A spokesman for the city council said: "We became aware of this at the weekend and we are carrying out an investigation with a view to taking action against those responsible.

"It is being cleared from the site today (Wednesday, November 6).

"There’s no excuse for dumping rubbish in this way – if anyone is aware of this sort of activity they can report it to our helpline on 0115 915 2020 or online at www.nottinghamcity.gov.uk/report-it.”

Pictures of the mess were uploaded to a Facebook page.
