Institute Stadium at Drumahoe facing demolition after 2017 flooding

A public consultation has been launched to decide the future of Institute FC's Riverside stadium.

The process will last for two weeks in which members of the public can put forward their views regarding the future of the ground.

Plans are being made to demolish the stands and buildings and return it to a green field site.

The stadium is located beside the River Faughan and suffered major damage following flooding in August 2017. The team have since relocated to Wilton Park and the Brandywell stadium.

Institute chairman Bill Anderson is hoping that continued talks with the council about relocating as part of the Clooney Masterplan to Clooney Park West.

He said: “There are on-going discussions with Derry City and Strabane District Council about our potential relocation.

“These things do take a long, long time but it is out for public consultation.

"People can go on to the council website and you’ll be able to see the Clooney Master Plan, which includes a community club being based at Clooney Park West."

Foyle MLA Gary Middleton said: “Since the devastating floods in the North West in 2017, Institute FC have been working proactively to develop their plans for the future.

"The Riverside stadium was very much part of their history and I know that a lot of hard work was put in by many people to develop the facility to the level it had reached.

"The proposed demolition of the Riverside stadium will return the site to its previous green field condition. It is hoped that some of the infrastructure can be used again on an alternative site.

"I would urge people to become involved in the public consultation and to make their views known.

"I would be keen to see the Riverside site restored and put back into another suitable use again in the future. I look forward to working closely with Institute FC and local stakeholders as this progresses.“
