‘Instilling terror’: Women in Zimbabwe accuse security forces of rape

Dozens of women in Zimbabwe have alleged they were raped by security forces during a brutal crackdown on street protests against rising fuel prices in mid-January.

Seventeen people were killed and around 1,500 were arrested during the unrest, which has tarnished the image of the country’s president, Emmerson Mnangagwa. As the crisis continues, more people are now speaking up about abuses they allegedly suffered at the hands of the security forces, including dozens of women who say they were raped. The government has blamed the violence on rogue elements and says it can only handle rape accusations that have been officially reported to the police. FRANCE 24’s Stefan Carstens and Caroline Dumay report from the capital Harare.
