Instant observations from Day 13 of Patriots training camp

Here are our instant observations from Day 13 of New England Patriots training camp on Tuesday at the practice fields behind Gillette Stadium.

Not practicing: TE Matt LaCosse, WR N’Keal Harry, WR Cam Meredith. The PUP and NFI lists still include WR Julian Edelman, WR Demaryius Thomas, OT Yodny Cajuste.

Limited: TE Stephen Anderson.

Pads: Shells. No contact.

Observations:

  • The Danny Elating experiment is over: The Patriots released the quarterback-turned-receiver before practice, per ESPN. The move comes after the team traded for tight end Eric Saubert.
  • Still no sign of Harry, the Patriots’ 2019 first-round pick, after he suffered an apparent injury in Week 1 of the preseason. His injury is reportedly minor, per multiple reports. Will he play in preseason Week 2?
  • In a fun moment, the Patriots had someone watering a corner of the field all morning, which set up a grass version of a slip and slide. Tom Brady then took the hose and sprayed rookies while they dove for a football on the watery grass. Linebackers coach Jerod Mayo also partook. He fumbled the first time, but went a second time with success.
  • Despite competition from a group of strong backs, running back Sony Michel continues to be the top running back on the depth chart. Left tackle Isaiah Wynn, the other 2018 first-round draft choice, was also among the starters for the initial walkthrough at practice on Tuesday. He alternated reps with Dan Skipper on Monday. The starting skill players included Michel, receivers Jakobi Meyers, Phillip Dorsett and Braxton Berrios and tight end Ben Watson.
  • New tight end Saubert caught a touchdown pass from Tom Brady during a red-zone 11-on-11 session. He caught a handful of passes.
  • The McCourty twins got a rousing rendition of Happy Birthday at the end of practice.
