Instant analysis: What 1st-round draft pick L.J. Collier brings to Seahawks

The Seattle Seahawks did what they do best, trading down twice in the first round, doubling their number of draft picks over the final two days of the NFL draft.

The Seahawks did use one of two first-round picks however, selecting TCU defensive end L.J. Collier at No. 29 overall.

Collier is a big 4-3 defensive end who coach Pete Carroll believes could play anywhere on the line, much like former Seahawks end Michael Bennett.

Scouts like Collier’s ruggedness, size and violent hand movements, which make him a surprisingly effective pass rusher despite his size.

After Frank Clark’s trade to the Chiefs, Seattle was in desperate need of another starting caliber pass rusher, and they have their man in Collier.

Although he’s a very different build than Clark, he should step in and immediately make an impact for the Seahawks, while having the versatility to play inside or outside on Ken Norton’s defensive front.
