Instant analysis: Washington defeats Giants, 30-29, on last-second field goal

The Washington Football Team won their first game of the season on Thursday with a 30-29 victory over the New York Giants on Thursday Night Football.

Washington kicker Dustin Hopkins nailed a 43-yard field goal as time expired to give Washington a critical win. It was Hopkins’ second attempt at the game-winner, as he initially missed from 48 yards out, but New York defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence was offsides on the play, giving Hopkins another crack at it.

It was a wild second half where the two teams went back and forth with the lead, but the Giants appeared to seize control in the fourth quarter. However, Washington quarterback Taylor Heinicke kept bringing the Football Team.

Heinicke found running back J.D. McKissic for a 56-yard gain down the right sideline to set up his next touchdown pass, a beautiful throw and catch to tight end Ricky Seals-Jones to give the WFT a 27-26 lead.

Washington’s defense finally forced the Giants to punt with less than five minutes remaining, giving the WFT the ball back late with the lead. After two strong Antonio Gibson runs, Heinicke passed the ball in a tight window but was picked off by James Bradberry.

The Giants made a field goal with two minutes remaining to take the lead back at 29-27.

Heinicke once again brought Washington back, putting his team in position for Hopkins to nail the game-winner.

Heinicke completed 34 of 46 passes for 336 yards with two touchdowns and one interception. Terry McLaurin had 11 receptions for 107 yards and a touchdown.

Washington is now 1-1 and faces Buffalo in Week 3.
