Instant analysis on the Browns selecting Sheldrick Redwine

The Cleveland Browns have selected Sheldrick Redwine, safety out of Miami with the 119th selection overall in the fourth round. This is largely viewed as a bit of a reach, but Redwine does have unique versatility with the ability to provide depth at both safety and cornerback. He can step in and not be a liability, but it is also unlikely he becomes a meaningful starter.

Although he lacks a ton of accolades on his resume, Redwine is a three-year starter, who played at a consistent level and was at his best this past season. He recorded career-highs last season with 64 tackles and three interceptions, which may be a sign that he is just scratching the surface of his potential.

What makes Redwine an intriguing prospect is his versatility, as he has played everywhere in the defensive backfield at a solid level.

Redwine was likely not taken sooner, because, despite his experience at multiple positions, he wasn’t great at any of them. This is not a huge issue as Cleveland is looking more for versatile depth in the fourth round and he has that in spades. He also lacks the ideal instincts you want in a starting safety, which does not make him a liability, but prevents him from being a play-maker.
