The Cleveland Browns added another receiving option to the offense with Harrison Bryant. The fourth-round pick is a receiving-oriented tight end from Florida Atlantic.
Bryant primarily projects as a move/slot tight end. At just 243 pounds, he’s not equipped to spend much time as an in-line blocking option. He’s a very accomplished receiver, leading all college tight ends in receptions (65) and receiving yards from the slot (730).
How that fits with the Browns is interesting. After signing Austin Hooper to play the primary in-line TE role, Bryant appears to be the primary backup for veteran David Njoku. With Njoku entering his contract season, this move smacks of a preemptive insurance against Njoku departing.
Bryant does have enough all-around skill to function as a big slot receiver in packages, as does Njoku. His presence likely pushes recently re-signed Pharaoh Brown off the active roster projections.
