Instant analysis of the Browns selecting Grant Delpit in Round 2

Grant Delpit is the newest member of the Cleveland Browns. The team tabbed the LSU safety with the 44th overall pick in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft.

It’s a good positional fit. The Browns are thin at safety, with free agents Andrew Sendejo and Karl Joseph the projected starters. Both are likely one-year solutions. Delpit gives them the potential to have found a long-term solution at the key position in the second round.

Delpit’s play was up-and-down at LSU. The good Delpit, the one who entered 2019 as the top safety in the class coming off a dominant 2018 season, is an instant starter in Cleveland. His size (6-2, 212) is great and he has natural coverage instincts.

He played hurt in 2019 and did not play particularly well. He was more tentative and sure of his approach angles and tackling. That’s why he fell to the second round after being an early top-10 overall projection.

The value is there with Delpit, but there is definite risk in relying on him. That pressure eases in the second round. It’s a pick Browns fans should be excited about given the all-around game Delpit can offer.
