Instant analysis of the Broncos’ selection of Juwann Winfree in NFL draft

The Denver Broncos have taken their second local prospect in this draft, taking wide receiver Juwann Winfree in the sixth round.

Winfree began his college career at Maryland before transferring to Colorado. He is coming off a season in which he caught 28 passes and found the end zone twice.

In Winfree, the Broncos are getting a versatile wide receiver who can make contested catches. He runs great routes but what might be his best on-field trait is his ability to block in the running game.

The Broncos needed depth at the wide receiver position and obviously saw something in Winfree as they traded up to pick No. 187 with the Carolina Panthers to take him.

If you look at his numbers in college, you will wonder why he was drafted. But if you watch him play, he does a lot of the little things that make a team better and steps up when his number is called.

In Denver, he should get a shot as a bigger target in the slot and as a guy who can make tough catches on third downs in order to move the chains.
