Instant analysis of Colts trading No. 26 pick to Redskins

The Indianapolis Colts traded the No. 26 overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft to the Washington Redskins on Thursday night.

A move that was always in the realm of possibilities, general manager Chris Ballard found a trade suitor to move back into the second round while adding a future pick as well.

Here are the details of the trade:

Redskins receive

  • No. 26 overall pick

Colts receive

  • No. 46 overall pick
  • 2020 second-round pick

This is a great move by the Colts. Ballard must feel the prospects on the board aren’t any that will be out of reach during the second day of the draft. The Colts now have three second-round picks and an extra second-round pick in the 2020 draft.

The Redskins wound up selecting former Mississippi State edge rusher Montez Sweat at No. 26, and the Colts ultimately passed on some solid prospects. However, they will be second on the board on Day 2 while having an extra pick in the second round.

Ballard noted during his pre-draft press conference that the skill set of prospects from the back of the first round to the beginning of the third round can be interchangeable.

The Colts won’t be making a selection during the first round of the draft, but they have loaded up for a big day on Friday, which is where the most value is in this year’s class.
