Instant analysis of Colts signing TE Ross Travis to contract extension

The Indianapolis Colts announced Tuesday that they signed tight end Ross Travis to a one-year contract extension, which keeps a talented piece at a very deep position for Frank Reich’s offense.

The 26-year-old Travis missed the entire 2018 season after suffering a season-ending knee injury during the final preseason game, but the Colts have shown their interest in his athleticism and versatility since he arrived in 2017.

The extension for Travis doesn’t guarantee a spot in the starting lineup. As much as the Colts like him, he is likely battling for a depth spot in the tight end room with the likes of Mo Alie-Cox, Gabe Holmes, Billy Brown and whoever else gets added to the 90-man roster.

Travis has solid size and versatility — he’s a former basketball player — to thrive in the Colts’ offensive scheme. He’s a strong receiver that makes plays after the catch with speed and long strides.

The top of the tight end room is locked up with Jack Doyle and Eric Ebron leading the group. It is also likely thought that Alie-Cox is currently the No. 3 tight end. This signing shouldn’t change that notion.

However, Travis does provide the Colts with a high-upside target at a position where Reich found immense success during the 2018 season. With Andrew Luck back under center, Travis is an intriguing fit in a dynamic offense.
