Instant analysis of Colts drafting LB Ben Banogu

After moving back three spots in a trade with the Cleveland Browns, the Indianapolis Colts made an addition to their front seven with the selection of former TCU linebacker Ben Banogu at No. 49 overall.

Quick Hits

  • Banogu is an athletic and explosive edge rusher standing at 6-foot-3 and 250 pounds with 33-inch arms.
  • Banogu is a versatile edge rusher that can rush the quarterback or drop into coverage. He has rushed from a two-point stance and a three-point stance.
  • From Lance Zierlein of NFL.com: Edge player with good athleticism, who could struggle to translate to the next level unless he diversifies his approach as a rusher. His quickness created opportunities with inside moves and twists in college, but NFL tackles will shut and lock that interior door on him until he proves he can threaten them around the corner. Banogu could challenge for a nickel rush position in the future, but he still needs work.

Fit with the Colts

The Colts had a need to add to the edge rusher room. It isn’t clear if Banogu will transfer full time to a defensive end but with Justin Houston and Jabaal Sheard with only a little time left on their contracts, a need for a potential long-term option off the edge was needed.

However, he did say during his post-draft press conference that playing linebacker is certainly in the plans.

Banogu has shown the ability to covert speed to power with consistency while also showing he can set a decent edge. The TCU product is a sound tackler that works through the ball carrier. There is upside to be had, but development must take place.

Conclusion

The Colts had a need to add to the front seven in terms of pass rushers. Banogu brings versatility, athleticism and explosiveness to the unit, but he will need further development as a technician before he becomes an impact starter. The aggressive front for the Colts could help him develop quickly and reach his potential.
