Instant analysis of Colts drafting CB Rock Ya-Sin

Instead of trading out of the spot to begin the second round, the Indianapolis Colts selected former Temple cornerback Rock Ya-Sin with the No. 34 overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft.

The Colts had a need to address the secondary at some point during the draft, and it appears Ya-Sin was at the top of the board.

Quick Hits

  • Ya-Sin has prototypical size to work the boundary standing at 6-foot-0 and 192 pounds. He also has ideal length with 32-inch arms.
  • Most consider him to be a better fit for a zone scheme where he can keep his eyes in the backfield and help against the run, which is one of his biggest strengths.
  • Draft Wire had Ya-Sin ranked as the No. 5 cornerback in class and No. 44 prospect overall.
  • From Gavino Borquez of Draft Wire: Overall, good size, and agility paired with competitive toughness and spatial awareness will make Ya-Sin a starter in a heavy zone-scheme. He’s a pure cover corner who should produce right away, once he can improve in man coverage, tackling, and a few other areas.
  • This selection was the final part of the deal with the New York Jets in 2018.

Fit with the Colts

Ya-Sin might not be a starter right away, but there is immense upside to be had if the Colts can develop his technique on the boundary. He has the length and footwork to succeed as a press corner while also featuring decent ball skills.

The Colts will have to work with Ya-Sin in terms of technique and tackling. He should have the benefit of not having to start right away but will likely be competing for the CB4 role in the defense while also seeing time on special teams.

Conclusion

The Colts needed to add some depth to the cornerback room and the fact that Ya-Sin doesn’t have to start right away should benefit his development. There are technical issues he will need to work on immediately, but there is plenty of upside to be had.
