Instant analysis: Falcons find a prototype base end in John Cominsky

The Falcons got a true prototype for a base defensive end with the selection of John Cominsky. While he didn’t have the production one would expect from his film at Charleston, he should see a lot more one-on-ones at the pro level, which will open the game up for him.

As an athlete, Cominsky’s best comparison is Cameron Jordan of the Saints, and it’s easy to see from his film as well. He’s not on Jordan’s level obviously as he needs a lot of work in his technique, but the Falcons should be able to get the best out of him with coach Dan Quinn taking a close interest in him.

Cominsky should play strong-side end in the base sets next to Deadrin Senat, Tyeler Davison and Adrian Clayborn. He will also be able to eventually play in the nickel at either strong-side end or as an interior pass rusher, replacing Jack Crawford in those sets long term.

In a word, the Falcons wanted the best athlete they could get at the position with this pick, and they got it. Cominsky’s the best defensive line athlete in this draft class and seems to be a pick that could fit at either end or tackle in the scheme. Atlanta got a really good one here in Cominsky and he should impact right away for the defense.
