Instagram-worthy food trends you need to know about - including pancake cereal and Dalgona coffee

Every year, viral new food trends flood our social media feeds.

Over the years, we've seen cake pops on sticks, rainbow bagels, whipped white 'cloud eggs', and our favourite desserts turned green with health-boosting Matcha green tea.

And this year is no different.

Though we've been on lock down for a good chunk of the year so far, new food and drinks trends have been cropping up on Instagram, TikTok and Pinterest.

And love it or hate it - you can't help but have a look.

Food trends for 2020 include the thickest coffee you've ever seen, tables covered edge-to-edge in edibles, a fluffy alternative to cereal and the mouth-watering revival of a lunch time classic.

Here's a round up of the most Instagram-worthy food trends of 2020 so far:

1. Pancake Cereal

The first 2020 trend we're zoning in on is pancake cereal.

Pancake cereal is literally that - cereal made out of pancakes.

The trend involves whipping up a batch of mini-pancakes, adding them into a bowl, pouring on milk or butter and maple syrup, then tucking in with a breakfast spoon.

To achieve the neat, perfectly round mini pancake shapes - pour your thick pancake batter into a piping bag with thin nozzle so you have more control on how the batter is squeezed out.

2. Dalgona Coffee

If you've come across a picture of a thick, creamy glass of coffee on your social media feed - it's probably Dalgona coffee.

Dalgona coffee is a viral Korean coffee drink that closely resembles a thicker version of an upside-down cappuccino.

You can drink it hot or cold and it's really simple to recreate at home if you own a whisk.

1. Add to a bowl two units of instant coffee, two units of sugar and two units of water.

2. Whisk it until a thick, meringue-like brown foam is created.

3. Spoon the foam onto hot or ice cold milk (or milk substitute) in your trendiest, hipster glass.

3. Grazing Tables

Like something from a fairy-tale banquet - grazing tables are merely tables or serving areas covered from edge to edge in finger food.

And if you're not a fan of washing up you'll like this one - no serving plates or bowls are needed.

The type of food you can expect to find at a grazing table varies but is usually in the style of French charcuterie boards holding cooked and cured meats, a selection of cheeses and nuts.

Of course, you can adapt your grazing table to suit your own taste.

On Instagram, we've seen exotic cake and pastry grazing tables, fondue-style grazing tables and ones dedicated to doughnuts, biscuits, macarons and marshmallows.

4. Sprinkle Cakes

Drip cakes are still very much in fashion - but this year they've been given an upgrade.

For those of you who are unaware, drip cakes are neatly stacked, multi-tiered cakes - usually covered in butter cream featuring contrasting-coloured ganache drips running down the sides.

But this year, expect them to be covered in sprinkles too - on the top, round the sides and even baked into the sponge.

5. Monster Sandwiches

We all have a favourite sandwich from basic ham to cheese and onion crisps.

But the modest classics have been bumped for colossal, flavour-packed, multi-filled sandwiches on extra special bread.

Search 'sandwich' on Instagram and you'll see what we mean.

There's currently 7.3 million pictures of the upgraded lunch-time classic - including 'Wagyu Katsu Sandos', giant vegan burger sandwiches, sushi sandwiches and even ones chocolate ones filled with Oreos.

6. Posh Toast

And it's a similar affair for toast, too.

Swiftly moving real butter, jam and controversial Marmite to the side - extravagantly topped 'posh' toast is taking over the kitchen.

Taking you from savoury to sweet, posh-topped toast includes chia-coated avocado on warm sourdough to grilled nectarine and mascarpone crostinis with crushed pistachio and balsamic glaze.

There's even books dedicated to how to do 'posh' toast properly - who knew?
