Hurricane Dorian hit the Bahamas on Sunday and has so far destroyed or damaged as many as 13,000 houses.
According to the Royal Bahamas Police Force as a result of the brutal winds and flooding.
Heavy rainfall from the storm has caused widespread flooding across the town, which is usually a major tourist destination.
Footage from the area shows choppy water submerging cars as palm trees bend and snap in the wind.
Thoughts and prayers for those whose homes and lives have been devastated by the category five hurricane have poured in from all over the world, but some have come under fire for the way they've gone about doing this.
A number of people have chosen to take Hurricane Dorian as an opportunity to share throwback photos of themselves on holiday in the Bahamas.
Users on Instagram have posted "appreciation" snaps of the Bahamas, showing themselves smiling and lounging in bikinis on white sands, or posing by a pool, alongside captions sharing their condolences.
And while the photos have gained many likes, a large proportion of the Instagram community were unimpressed and voiced their disapproval in the comments.
Some of the images were branded "disgraceful" and "disgusting" with one user instructing the posters to "delete" their photos immediately.
Dorian is now slowly moving west towards the US with Florida, Georgia, North and South Carolina declared as states of emergency.
Bahamas Prime Minister Hubert Minnis has begged residents of Abaco and Grand Bahamas to head for the main island to escape the "devastating, dangerous" storm.
"I want you to remember: homes, houses, structures can be replaced. Lives cannot be replaced," he told a news conference on Saturday.
