Instagram users fear app is spying on them as 'camera on' indicator keeps coming on

It’s the go-to social media app for millions of people around the world, but if you use Instagram, this news may raise some concerns.

Several Instagram users are worried that the app is spying on them, after noticing the iOS 14 ‘camera on’ indicator keeps coming on, even if they’re not taking the photo.

The ‘camera on’ indicator was introduced in Apple’s latest software update, and means your iPhone now displays an indicator whenever an app is using the mic or camera.

While the indicator should come on while you’re taking a photo or video on Instagram, users have noticed that it’s also on when they’re simply scrolling through their feeds.

User KevDoy tweeted: “Casually browsing Instagram when suddenly the new iOS 14 camera/microphone indicator comes on.

"Then control panel ratted out the app behind it. This is going to change things.”

Thankfully, Instagram has now confirmed that the app is not spying on you, the and the issue is due to a bug.

Instagram trick lets you write on your Stories in ‘Rainbow Text’

Speaking to The Verge, an Instagram spokesperson said: “We only access your camera when you tell us to — for example, when you swipe from Feed to Camera.

“We found and are fixing a bug in iOS 14 Beta that mistakenly indicates that some people are using the camera when they aren’t.

“We do not access your camera in those instances, and no content is recorded.”
