Instagram statement asks users to "bear with us" as site crashes for over three hours

It has been over three hours since a number of the world's biggest social media and messaging platforms went down.

Instagram, Facebook and Whatsapp servers crashed on Monday evening after 4pm, leaving users worldwide unable to access their services in what has been called Facebook's biggest outage since 2008.

In a statement on their official Twitter account, Instagram asked users to be patient as they tried to fix the problem at 5.25pm.

It read: "Instagram and friends are having a little bit of a hard time right now, and you may be having issues using them. Bear with us, we’re on it! #instagramdown "

Downdetector, a website that reviews the status of social media platforms, received more than 30,800 reports about Instagram being down.

Half of these were issues related to the app, 50% while 26% were server connection problems and 24% were linked to the website.
