Instagram influencer 'Mercedes Mum' jailed over 230kph police pursuit

Margarita Tomovska was surrounded by the media as she arrived at court.

A social media influencer who led police on a high-speed chase and posted videos and selfies on her way to court has been sentenced to 18 months' jail.

Margarita Tomovska, known as "Mercedes Mum" to her thousands of followers, reached speeds of 238 kilometres per hour during the incident in November last year.

The nine-minute chase ended in dramatic fashion when officers stopped the Mercedes AMG sports car at gunpoint, fearing a firearm was inside.

Inside the vehicle was a male passenger and a child who was restrained incorrectly.

In Wollongong Local Court, Tomovska, 28, sat emotionless as she heard the sentence which included a nine-month non-parole period.

Prosecutor Amelia Wall had opened her sentencing submissions by referring to an Instagram story posted on Tomovska's account earlier in the day, which appeared to show her travelling in a car going 126kph in a 80kph zone near Heathcote.

Sergeant Wall said Tomovska's conduct had been "reprehensible" and showed "absolutely no remorse".

"If these facts don't land a person in jail, something is seriously wrong," she said.

Magistrate Susan McGowan was scathing in her sentencing remarks, labelling the chase a "recipe for disaster" with "no margin for error".

Looking at Tomovska disbelievingly, Ms McGowan said a car was a lethal weapon and that driving at 238kph was "inconceivable".

"I have never seen one quite as bad as this," she said.

Earlier, defence lawyer Louis Angelovski argued community service was a suitable punishment, highlighting Tomovska's age and the need to care for her daughter as reasons not to impose a custodial penalty.

"This won't ever happen again," he said.

Mr Angelovski signalled an intention to appeal the sentence and later applied for bail for his client, which was refused.

On Thursday evening, Tomovska's Instagram account was no longer active.
