'Instagram influencer' blocks busy Dehradun road to pour himself a drink in viral clip, DGP orders probe

DEHRADUN: Uttarakhand's director general of police Ashok Kumar has ordered a probe after a viral video purportedly showing an Instagram "influencer" consuming liquor on a busy Dehradun road triggered widespread anger and condemnation in the hills, with hundreds of people demanding that "outsiders not be allowed to sully Devbhoomi".

On July 28, Haryana-resident Bobby Kataria had uploaded a video to his verified Instagram account with about 6.3 lakh followers in which he can be seen sitting on a chair in the middle of a road and consuming liquor. The video, shot by Kataria's aide, has been uploaded with a background song that says 'Roads apne baap ki (The roads belong to my father)'.

Ordering an inquiry into the incident on Wednesday, DGP Kumar said, "The man seen in the video is blocking the road and consuming liquor in public. This is totally unacceptable and illegal. Strict action will be taken against those seen in the viral video."

One of the police officers involved in the probe said, "We will soon arrest Kataria and take necessary action."

Uttarakhand residents on social media condemned the act. "People coming from other cities are ruining the culture of the hill state," said a social media user.
