Instagram, Facebook and WhatsApp are DOWN leaving some users unable to see pictures

Popular social media apps Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram have all crashed this afternoon.

According to DownDetector, the issues started at around 2.49pm, and are affecting users across the UK and parts of the US.

The reason for the outage remains unclear, although 82% of those who reported problems with Instagram said the issue was with the News Feed, 11% with the website, and 6% with log-in.

Meanwhile over on Facebook , the main problem seems to lie in displaying photos, with many users seeing code in place of pictures.

Facebook, which owns the three sites, is yet to comment on the issue.

Many users have taken to  Twitter  to vent their frustrations at the outage.

One user wrote: "Oh yay. Instagram is down so my post is just floating in obscurity until it's fixed."

Another said: "Anyone else having problems uploading photos to facebook and instagram? I've been trying for the past 30mins and no luck...very awkward for work!"

And one added: "Great news! Not only Instagram, also Facebook and WhatsApp, what a lovely day!"
