Instagram explains why it won't go back to chronological feed despite pleas from users

Back in 2016, Instagram caused huge controversy after changing its newsfeed from chronological order to a more tailored feed.

At the time, Instagram claimed that the change would improve user experience.

In a blog, it explained: “The order of photos and videos in your feed will be based on the likelihood you’ll be interested in the content, your relationship with the person posting and the timeliness of the post.”

One user tweeted: “Social media algorithms are completely ridiculous. I follow 705 people on Instagram and I swear I only see the same 5 people scrolling. I have no “close friends” or special lists set up. So stupid. Give us back chronological posting.”

Another wrote: “Instagram I love logging into your app to see 2 day old posts at the top but nothing my friends have recently posted. Thank you for continually ignoring customer requests for a chronological feed!”

And one joked: “I’m really tired of seeing things from 5-6 days ago and making me look like a stalker.”

Unfortunately, it looks like Instagram’s ranked feed is here to stay…
