Facebook and Instagram down: Frustrated users locked out of social media apps

Instagram and Facebook appear to have crashed for users in the UK, leaving tens of thousands of users locked out.

More than 16,000 people in the UK alone flocked to Down Detector at around 7pm to note issues with Instagram.

By 7.30pm that number had jumped to 20,000.

Facebook also receive complaints, with more than 6,000 people reporting a 'total blackout' of the platform.

The problem did not seem to be confined to the UK, with users from continental Europe taking to Twitter to complain of the faulty service.

It is not clear what has caused the outage.

Some people decided to see the bright side in the app crashing.

One person wrote on Twitter: "When Instagram is down I feel a shiver of joy thinking about the millions of white women who don't! know! what! to! do! because they can't talk to themselves in their phone cameras."

Another added: "Now that Instagram is down I guess we gotta actually focus on online school."

The website seemed to be back online in parts of the UK as of 7.30pm.
