Instagram down as thousands of users complain they can't use social media app

Thousands of Instagram users are complaining they can't use the social media platform with reports the app is down.

People all around the world have struggled to access the popular platform over the past few hours.

Many are reporting that their news feeds won't refresh, while some say the app is refusing to open.

Others say their comments could not be posted.

DownDetector was hit with a sharp spike as news of the outage spread on twitter.

One posted: "Running on Twitter to see why Instagram is not working again #instagramdown."

Another said: "Apologising to my internet after blaming it for instagram being down."

A third fumed: "this is literally the FIFTH time this week that instagram has been down for me, get your act together insta and stop crashing so much"

According to DownDetector, reports of outages began escalating around 10am.

Nearly 5,000 complaints were lodged - with most in the UK coming from London, Manchester, and Glasgow.

Users of the popular social media app were left frustrated after an error message appeared for many saying there is an issue with the service.

It reads: "We're sorry, but something went wrong. Please try again."

The outage seems to have impacted users on both the iPhone and Android app.

It appears the vast majority of complaints seem to be centred on Instagram Stories.

More than 700 Instagram users have taken to social media to complain about issues with the service.

Instagram only lists a problem with deleted comments still appearing beneath posts on the social network.

It confirms: "If you keep getting an error message that a comment can't be deleted, it may be because the comment was already deleted in our system.

"The comment may still appear because you're viewing an old version of the page. We're aware of this issue and are working on a fix."
