Instagram ditches creepy 'Following' tab that let users 'stalk' their friends

It’s been a staple feature since 2011, but Instagram has announced that it’s finally ditching the ‘Following’ tab.

The tab shows the photos and videos that your friends have liked, followed and commented on, and was a handy way to discover new content.

However, speaking to Buzzfeed News , Instagram confirmed that the tab will be removed on the app this week.

Vishal Shah, Instagram’s head of product, revealed that the decision to remove the tab came as Instagram suspected many users didn’t use it.

Mr Shah said: “People didn’t always know that their activity is surfacing.

“So you have a case where it’s not serving the use case you built it for, but it’s also causing people to be surprised when their activity is showing up. Simplicity was the driving factor.”

The decision has been met by mixed reviews from Instagram users, with some welcoming the change.

One user said: “I was never a fan of the ‘Following’ feature. Felt creepy.”

And another joked: “Moment of silence for all the creepers.”

However, others are devastated about the change.

One user said: “Sad to see it go. It’s a great way to find new people and awesome photos.”

Another added: “Noooo whyyy! I use that every day to find new photographers that my friends are interacting with...what the hell instagram.”
