Instagram down in UK along with Facebook as thousands complain of social media outage

Thousands of people have been affected by a worldwide Instagram and Facebook outage.

Downdetector, a website which records reports outages, saw a spike of 4,000 complaints from Instagram users at 2pm.

Reported problems included with the news feed, login and with the stories feature.

There were also reports of Facebook, which owns Instagram, being down, with a spike of 500 reports recorded at the same time.

Users reported problems with logging in, uploading pictures and some people reporting a "total blackout".

Downdetector's outage map shows that users in the UK, United States and Brazil are the worst affected.

WhatsApp, which is also owned by Facebook, did not appear to be affected by the outage.

People took to social media to vent their frustration, with some in the US joking it was a ploy by Instagram to force them to talk to their family during Thanksgiving.

One person wrote: "Since last night no ones IG displays any content, including mine... just says "can't refresh feed"

"I messaged Instagram several times, no response as usual. Everything seems okay from browser. Just app not working. I uninstalled, restarted phone- nothing works."

Another said: "Instagram watching us complain abt it being down knowing they’re forcing us to talk to family members," alongside a gif of people laughing hysterically.

While another person said it stopped working after updating the app.

In a statement, a Facebook spokesman said: “We’re aware that some people are currently having trouble accessing Facebook’s family of apps. We’re working to get things back to normal as quickly as possible.”
