Instagram account that targeted children is shut down thanks to school pupils who raised the alarm

An Instagram account that featured inappropriate images of young people has been shut down after school pupils raised the alarm.

The anonymously run account has been deleted, after staff at Sale High School were made aware of its existence and reported it.

The account included photos of young people in underwear. They were not children at the school.

Messages had also been sent to children asking them for inappropriate photos of themselves.

Students, who are taught in school about online safety, raised the alarm with their parents - who contacted the school.

Staff also issued an alert to all parents, urging them to check their children's accounts to make sure they were safe.

The appeal read: "Safeguarding alert from Sale High School:

"We have become aware today of an Instagram account which features inappropriate pictures of young people.

"We have also been alerted that children are being contacted from this account.

"Please check your child’s Instagram account a.s.a.p. to check they are safe from potential exploitation and help us by reporting any accounts which are unsafe to Instagram."
