Inspiring Edinburgh schoolboy's campaign has handed out 5000 pairs of socks to homeless

A charity set up by a kind Edinburgh schoolboy two years ago has so far distributed 5000 pairs of socks to homeless people in Edinburgh.

Joseph Cox was keen to do something to help after seeing people sleeping rough around Leith.

Aged just 11, he set up Socks for the Street, an initiative which collects socks and underwear for homeless people.

His kindness was praised around the country and he was recognised at the Young Scot Awards in 2018.

Two years since the charity started, it has donated about 5000 pairs of socks, around 2000 pairs of underwear as well as hats, scarves and gloves. He has also handed out around 100 sleeping bags.

Socks for the Street are now looking for new donations as the weather begins to turn cold.

They said: "Slowly but surely, we are bracing ourselves for a busy winter."

Donations can be dropped off at Leith Primary School and you can find out more on the charity's Facebook page here.
