Inspiring, courageous, beautiful, empowered: Models affected by cancer do something pretty incredible for a pretty incredible cause

Inspiring, courageous, beautiful, empowered.

These women and men have seen their lives turned upside down by cancer.

Over the last 18 months, many patients have seen delays in diagnosis and treatment. Others were forced to isolate away from family and friends at a time when they needed them the most.

That is why this year's Maggie's on the Runway was such a huge celebration.

The event on Saturday saw some 60 models - all of which have been affected by the cruel disease - take to the catwalk in a bid to raise money for Maggie's Manchester.

The centre, which costs £3,000 a day to run, is based in the grounds of The Christie and provides practical, emotional and social support to those living with cancer, as well as their loved ones.

Many of the models who took part have undergone surgery, or gruelling chemo or radiotherapy. They know first hand the impact treatment can have on their bodies or mental health.

Maggie's on the Runway gives those involved the chance to regain some of the confidence taken from them by cancer - as well as making them feel a million dollars on the catwalk.

They were each treated like the superstars they are; hair, make-up, designer clothes.

The event took place at Manchester Airport's Runway Visitor's Centre and raised more than £220,000, taking the total including previous years to almost £700,000.

There were performances from long-time supporter Rick Astley, Annie Handbag and an Elton John tribute act to name a few, as well as raffles and auctions.

Producer Margo Cornish - who has now helped to raise more than £1m for cancer charities - thanked everyone who supported this year's event.

She said: "Saturday was particularly emotional and rewarding for me as the past 18 months have been very hard for people living with cancer.

"Delays in diagnosis and treatment has resulted in huge emotional stress for them and their loved ones and having an event like this seemed like a huge celebration for us all.

"Maggie's on the Runway is all about fashion, fun, fundraising, friendship and focus and we hit all of these with great gusto especially the fundraising which has reached a gigantic £220,000 and still climbing.

"I am so proud of all our models who have worked so hard over the last few months to help pull it all together especially as some have been going over to The Christie for treatment between rehearsals.

"Maggie's on the Runway is one big family that keeps on growing and creating friendships and a support network that will last a lifetime for everyone.

"Thank you to everyone that supported us on this latest journey including our incredible fashion and beauty sponsors, backstage crew and everyone else that has made it such a magical journey this year."
