Inspirational student to leave wheelchair behind as walkers honour memory of Adrian 'Lionheart' McCallum to raise awareness of mental health and Kris Boyd Charity

An inspirational student is to take his first steps in more than a year to honour a former wrestling champ.

Ross Munro, who lives with muscular dystrophy, will strap on leg braces to walk without the aid of his wheelchair.

It comes as students at Ayrshire College prepare to remember the late Adrian 'Lionheart' McCallum.

The much-loved grappling king, from Ayr, played a key part in the College's mental health campaign 'Passing Positivity'.

And his legacy has lived on with hundreds set to complete a 12 mile walk in his memory tomorrow.

Lockdown may have put a halt to the event, but students and staff will still be honouring Adrian as part of their daily exercise.

And Ross, 19, will be leading the way in his own house by walking from his bedroom to the living room.

Proud dad Kenny said: "I can't remember the last time he walked this distance.

"He's been in a chair since he was 14, so this is a huge thing for him to do.

"But he's never let his condition get him down.

"And raising awareness of mental health issues has always been very important for him."

Ross, who plays boccia for Scotland, will join others in raising awareness of the #PassingPositivity campaign and the Kris Boyd Charity.

The former Rangers and Scotland star's mental health charity is heavily involved with the College and its various projects.

John McTaggart, Curriculum Manager for Sports and Fitness at the College, said: "For the students, this started as as a great opportunity to raise awareness of mental health and funds for The Kris Boyd Charity.

"But most importantly it was a way of paying tribute to Adrian.

"He had supported the campaign of #PassingPositivity, which not only led to it gaining national recognition and awards, but also based on the social media comments impacted positively on people worldwide.

"His motto was 'Believe' and never in life has that been more important than now."

Members of the public are also urged to take part on their daily exercise and can take photos/videos and post them on social media using #walk4lionheart #PassingPositivity @krisboydcharity and @ayrshirecoll
