Inspirational Peterlee boy delivers 1,000th coronavirus survival pack to youngsters in town

A Peterlee boy has delivered his 1,000th coronavirus survival pack to youngsters in County Durham.

Alfie Dixon-Clark has been making the packs since the UK lockdown started, filling them with chocolate, colouring pages and other items to help them.

The 12-year-old's bags have been so popular that he has been determined to keep supplying them, using his pocket money to fund the project.

Now, Alfie, known locally as ‘Alf the Kid’, has handed out his 1,000th bag and has no intention of stopping, with plans for special VE Day bags for care homes.

His mum, Jaynie Dixon-Clark, has been helping him to deliver them to people in the community.

Jaynie, who is a healthcare worker, said: “It is amazing what he has achieved. He wanted to deliver his 1,000th bag to his best friend, Josh, so we went and delivered it to him.

“Alfie had first said he wanted to give him the 100th bag and then realised one day that he’d handed out more than that and was on his way to 200.

“It was at the end of last week I said ‘Do you realise that when we get to the end of this pack it will be 1,000 bags?’

“People all over the estate know about what he has been doing and are asking about ‘Alf the Kid’.”

Alfie used money that he’d saved for his birthday in May to buy supplies for the bags and now uses his weekly pocket money to keep the project going, with locals also making donations.

Now, The Academy at Shotton Hall pupil is getting ready to make special VE Day bags for care home residents.

Jaynie said: “They are going to have VE Day flags that you can cut out, colour in and make bunting with.

“We are going to drop them off at care homes and also at the homes of unpaid carers.

“Alfie said VE Day is about giving something back to the people who gave us our freedom when they have lost theirs just now because they can’t leave their care homes.”
