Inspirational Derry boy takes on month-long fundraiser for Foyle Search and Rescue

A 12-year old Derry boy is taking on a month-long fundraiser in his efforts to raise money for Foyle Search and Rescue.

Travis Brown, a student at St Columb's College, is doing a sponsored 5km walk every night during the month of November. The walk will leave from Sainsbury’s at 7.30pm.

As well as helping Foyle Search and Rescue, Travis is also planning to donate money to Claude's Cafe to help them with their Christmas dinner appeal.

Travis' mum, Sinead, spoke to MyDerry about her son's incredible effort.

She said: "Travis always wants to help people. He won £10 at his football and donated it to Moji, who were delivering food during lockdown to elderly and vulnerable people, including Travis' grandad.

"A local farmer was looking for help gathering potatoes in his field, Travis went along to help and the money he was given for helping he donated to Moji.

"A friend of Travis was affected by the loss of a relative and Travis did a sponsored walk to help raise money for his friend's grieving family. If he can help someone in any way, he will.

"Even at his football training if there is someone being left out he is the first person to make sure they are being included. He is amazing."

After a successful sponsored walk last year, Travis and his mum saw the Foyle Search and Rescue on patrol and Travis decided he wanted to do what he could to help.

Sinead said: "Foyle Search and Rescue were out searching for someone. Travis immediately was thinking about what he could do to help them. As we were on our walks, another family was filled with anxiety and dread and Travis decided to do another walk.

"The walk this year takes place every night this month leaving Sainsburys at 7.30pm to the Craigavon Bridge, across and over the Peace Bridge.

"We would encourage anyone who is willing to make it to join us in our efforts. Everyone is more than welcome to join us.

"The more walking with us the merrier!"

Those who cannot make the walk can donate via PayPal to traviswalk2021@gmail.com
