Is it really a quarter of a century since you could get arrested for wearing an Inspiral Carpets T-shirt? Not because the police forces of the United Kingdom were opposed on principle to organ-driven, 60s-styled garage pop from Greater Manchester, but because in those days – and all this is making it sound like the Victorian era – having a swear-word on a T-shirt was considered offensive, and the Inspiral Carpets T-short in question bore the legend “Cool as fuck”. These days you could go to work in Scotland Yard wearing that and no one would bat an eyelid. How times change.
Let us interrupt this reverie about T-shirts past and present with exciting news from the land of Inspiral Carpets, for the baggy ones – “stars of the Madchester boom of the late 80s and early 90s” it says here – are back after 20 years away. Their new album, entitled Inspiral Carpets, will be released on Cherry Red on 29 September, but it’d preceded by a single, Spitfire, on 25 August.
