Inspectors rate nursery as 'very good' after improvements

A large nursery in Ayr has been rated as “very good” by inspectors - which is the second highest score achievable.

The Care Inspectorate had no official ‘recommendations’ at all for the Dalmilling Cherry Tree Early Years Centre in its latest report.

Inspectors noticed the nursery had “cosy and inviting areas” to help children learn and small sinks at the right height for kids to wash their hands.

Staff were seen helping children to develop relationships, friendships and understand routines and boundaries.

Praising the ‘well organised’ outdoor play area, inspectors said: “We observed very happy children exploring environment.”

Nursery employees were described as “friendly and caring” and praised for working together to provide a safe and nurturing place for youngsters.

The report said management had a “hands on” approach, which meant they had good relationships with staff.

The Care Inspectorate report said: “During the inspection we found there was a warm and friendly ethos. “Children throughout the service were observed as confident, happy, and engaged, accessing all areas. We saw some good opportunities to develop children's curiosity, enquiry, creativity skills inside and outside.”

Overall the centre scored ‘very good’ in quality of care and support, quality of environment and management and leadership. Quality of staffing was rated as ‘good.’

The results were published on July 7.

The South Ayrshire Council-run childcare hub, which can take up to 150 children, has improved since the last inspection.

The previous one in 2018 graded the nursery, which sits beside Dalmilling Primary, as ‘good and adequate.’

During that visit inspectors handed out four recommendations, which have all been met.

Inspectors chatted to kids and parents during the most recent inspection.
Comments from children included: ‘I like playing with my friends, we have fun’ and ‘The garden is the best.’

One parent said: “"I feel that my child has had the correct support when needed. I am included in decision making for my child."

The unannounced inspection took place in February - but the verdict was released this month.

Inspectors said parts of the lunch service could be improved.
