City insiders have given the strongest hint yet of what Boris Johnson ’s Cabinet will look like.
Mr Johnson’s team have met key business figures, and sources say current Home Secretary Sajid Javid will be Chancellor.
The source said: “Sajid has been a safe pair of hands and behaved properly during the contest. So he’ll be rewarded.”
A Whitehall insider said: “He has the background. He used to be head of credit trading at Deutsche Bank. I think the City are pleased they’ll get someone who speaks their language.”
The source said he has more personality than the current chancellor.
Insiders also predict losers in a Johnson cabinet reshuffle, such as leadership rival Jeremy Hunt being replaced at the Foreign Office by Michael Fallon or Iain Duncan Smith.
The source said: “Boris has said he would keep a woman in at least one of the top four jobs. That means Penny Mordaunt is probably safe at Defence.”
The 160,000 Conservative Party members are voting between Mr Johnson and Mr Hunt. The winner is expected to be announced on July 23.
