Insider Trading: Lucy Jackson & Nikki Westcott On Business, Podcasting & Authenticity

lucy and nikki

Lucy Jackson and Nikki Westcott are the inspiring entrepreneurs you’ve been looking for. We’ve all had a convo with our work bestie about starting a business, and these girls have made it come true — not once, but twice. Going from working together at Red Bull to starting a fashion label, Jagger & Stone, AND a podcast, Happy Hour with Lucy & Nikki — that’s pretty darn impressive.

“It’s always nice when people don’t assume that we are the owners of Jagger & Stone, because we kind of like being anonymous there,” Nikki told PEDESTRIAN.TV

Lucy continued on, replying: “But we love that it has its own kind of brand, as we’re so front-facing on Happy Hour with Lucy & Nikki.”

For this rendition of Insider Trading, we’re chatting to the divas themselves for all the juicy entrepreneurial tips you wish you had heard years ago.

Insider Trading: Lucy & Nikki

Hey Lucy and Nikki! So, in your own words, can you please tell me a little bit about what you guys do?

Lucy: Well, we have a few projects on the go. We own Jagger & Stone, which is our fashion label, and that’s kind of our main, biggest baby.

We release two episodes a week on Happy Hour with Lucy & Nikki, our podcast. Then, on Friday and Saturday nights, we record on the Hit Network or the radio.

And how would you describe your typical day?

Nikki: We try to always stick to the schedule that we have for a certain day. That we podcast, a certain day, that we radio, a certain day, that we make sure we’re available for.

Lucy: It’s actually probably one of our biggest blessings and curses, if that’s even the right way to say it, but every week is very different to the next, so it keeps everything very interesting.

What’s your favourite thing about what you do and the multifaceted career that you lead?

Lucy: That’s a good question. I mean, the podcast is so fun and easy because essentially, we’re just sitting there talking to each other, and we’re best friends.

So that is quite a stress-free role, but I would say that we really love working on this strategy for our brand and seeing our brand do really well. It’s very rewarding, especially because it is our biggest project. So that is something that we really thrive on.

And your friendship makes the podcast so interesting and incredible to listen to. But does it have challenges as business partners, from day to day?

We’re pretty lucky that we have a very good working relationship, since we’ve worked together since we met. And you know, like, you’re always going to have days where you’re sick of each other. But we’d rather it be each other and not someone else. I wouldn’t do this with anyone other than Nikki.

Let’s talk quickly about the partnership with Bobby. It’s so exciting. How did it come about?

Lucy: Well, we’ve been kind of chatting with Bobby on and off, and they’ve sent us some products. We really love their branding.

Nikki: And it’s funny because they then have their like, like, sparkling waters, and it’s called Billy, and that’s two of Lucy’s Frenchies, Bobby and Billy.

Lucy: So it just felt very like a natural alignment. And now we love the product. I’m a big soft drink drinker, admittedly, and it’s epic to be working with a brand that’s low calorie but good to drink during the day.

And you got to collaborate on the flavour, right? Strawberries and Cream?

Nikki: Correct, so it’s really delicious. (You can snag a Bobby Strawberry & Cream 8 Pack here.)

Do you have one big thing that’s been your biggest learning curve so far?

Lucy: It’s so funny you should ask this because we literally were speaking on a panel the other day. We get asked this all the time, and it’s like we forget.

I mean, without going into too many details, we’ve definitely had some stressful challenges thrown our way quite often, usually in the space of IP and contracts and stuff like that.

So we have had some periods where we’ve thought “Oh my gosh, are we going to lose everything?” kind of vibes, but yeah, it’s always prevailed in the end. So we’re very lucky.

Nikki: I think it’s one of those things like you that when you start something, you don’t realise what it could eventually be. So it’s always like, get that shit in writing.

Lucy: You start things off on a bit of a whim, not thinking they are going to end up being a big part of your brand, so it is good to have everything locked in from day one.

And going back to the beginning of your career, what do you think your dream job was?

Lucy: We’re actually quite old, but, I think back then, it was still in the era of magazines and stuff. I think we were both volunteering at Fashion Week, that kind of vibe. So I feel like we both felt like we knew we wanted to get into the space of media and fashion, and now it has evolved.

Lucy: All we wanted to do was be in the hustle and bustle, like fashion and PR. And so we’ve been very fortunate to end up exactly in that industry.

What is your advice to people starting out in the podcast space?

Lucy: One of my friends just started a podcast with her best friend, and she was like, “What advice can you give me?”

Like the other day, I would say the key to forming a community in the podcast space is very, very dependent on your consistency. So you can’t just do a podcast for three months and then stop for three months and bring it back three months later, hoping that the audience is still going to be there.

You create a community by providing the content to them week in and week out, so that they get familiar with you. They know you. They want to listen to you every Monday and Thursday on their hot girl walks. So, I would say my advice is that consistency is a huge part of it.

But what do you think is the secret to your success, authenticity?

Nikki: Before we started the podcast, when we were just doing social media stuff, we tried to fit into so many different pockets. Like, are we the travel girls? Are we the makeup girls? It turns out we were just crazy festival girls. And then when we started the podcast, party girls had all of those stories to share too.

Lucy: Yeah, just being yourself from day one. The more true we are to ourselves, the better our brands perform. So it just works.

And what do you think is the most unhinged thing that you’ve seen in your careers that we could legally publish?

Lucy: I mean, we got a lift home once from Coachella with Vin Diesel. He pretty much propositioned us for a threesome.

I think the thing about the industry and creators in the space is that everyone’s just so fun and loves having a good time. And well, not everyone, but most of the people that we surround ourselves with. I wouldn’t use the word unhinged, but everyone just loves to have a good time, and that’s what makes working in this industry so fun.

Who are some of the people you admire within the industry?

Lucy: I guess I look up to Alex Cooper a lot in the podcasting space; what she’s created with Call Her Daddy is pretty wild. But if we’re talking more locally, I am really fascinated by Pip Edwards’ career. I feel like she is extremely good at what she does in the fashion space.

Nikki: I think that she has really distinct talent in being a creative director, so she’s probably someone locally also. And then we love the Dom Dolla crew, and James [Fava, who is the manager of Dom Dolla]. Like what he’s created, and the journey he’s been on with Dom.

Nikki: Like in five years, being someone who was playing at Rev to now packing out stages globally. Dom and his team just have such a strong vision, and they’re so fun, lovely and welcoming.

Lucy: Even just like they’ve got everything dialled in down to their TikTok strategy and everything, they kind of are really across all the events that they do.

Nikki: It’s like a brand, not just an artist.

And guys, my last question for you that we ask everyone is, how would you describe your email inbox in three words?

Both: Unread.

The good news? We’ve been told that they might have a tour coming at the end of the year. Keep your eyes (and ears) peeled for that one.
