Insider reveals why the checkouts at Aldi are so small and why it makes the shop successful

We all know that it's a challenge and almost an Olympic sport to keep up with the checkout staff at Aldi.

But what makes shopping at the budget German supermarket even harder is how small the checkout is.

When the Aldi employee rapidly scans your items there's very limited space after the till so you soon run out of room for all your food.

So is there a reason why the checkouts are so small? If so, why?

In a Channel Five documentary that aired earlier this week, ex-staff and experts lifted the lid on the clever ploys that the retailer has used to make its products so competitively priced, including the size of its checkouts, MirrorOnline reports.

Experts on the show confirmed that a small till area prompt shoppers to put items straight back into their trolleys and then pack them at the back of the shop.

This means the check-out is cleared quicker for new shoppers, and staff can scan more items.

This efficiency measure is one of many that help to keep prices low.
