Inside Wales' first Popeyes fast food restaurant as it prepares to welcome diners

Cardiff has recently seen some great additions to its foodie scene and now the highly anticipated American fast food chain Popeyes is opening its doors in the Welsh capital. It will be the restaurant's first Welsh opening.

Located on St John Street, with a bright orange front meaning you cannot miss it, Popeyes will be serving its famous chicken dishes, especially the chicken sandwich which 'broke the internet' in 2019 after it went viral. Opening on Thursday, March 23 the restaurant, which seats 80 people, is decorated in the bright and colourful orange and blue branding of Popeyes.

The restaurant feels spacious, and not cramped, unlike other fast food restaurants where you feel you are jostling for space, meaning you can find a seat easily and enjoy your meal. Featuring a mixture of booths, tables and stools the restaurant is also decorated with neon signs that read 'Y'all ready for this?'

There are screens you can order from and the ceiling is decorated with orange panels. The tables are laid out in long aisles, with Popeyes being much bigger than it looks on the inside.

Now onto the food. Popeyes has an extensive menu, which also includes a vegan burger. Their famed chicken sandwich is made simply from chicken, mayonnaise, gherkins and a bun. You can keep up to date with the latest What's On news by signing up to the newsletter here.

While this may seem pretty simple, it is utterly delicious. The chicken is hand-breaded, hand-battered and hand fried with nothing coming pre-prepared and all made fresh in the kitchen where the staff undergo extensive training and learn to assemble a sandwich in less than 60 seconds.

The famous shatter crunch lasts throughout every bite, there is no soggy chicken here, making the sandwich crunchy, crisp and mouth-watering. There is great flavouring, which hits you straight away, and the sandwiches are a very decent size meaning you will not leave hungry.

Other options on the menu include Hot Wings, which do carry a kick, chicken tenders and the Popeyes Biscuit. I won't ruin the surprise but it's not what we would deem as a biscuit in the UK.

What a treat (WalesOnline/Rob Browne)
