Inside train station with carriage and platform transformed into home on sale for £550k

A converted railway station with a ticket office in the bedroom and a carriage in the garden is on the market near Exeter and could be a perfect home for a train enthusiast.

In an idyllic setting with a converted waiting room opening onto the railway platform, Station Halt is for sale with offers over £550,00.

The main drawback is that it can only be accessed by foot for most of the year.

The former railway station at Brampford Speke was part of the Exe Valley Railway, a branch line built by Great Western Railway (GWR), and opened on May 1, 1885.

In 1923 staff were withdrawn with the station becoming an unmanned stop and then it came under the Beeching cuts in 1963 - were many minor tracks were closed for greater efficiency.

Station Halt was converted into a house soon after.

Access is either a 900ft walk along a public footpath crossing an iron footbridge over the River Exe and through a meadow, or via a private ford only passable by a four-wheel drive vehicle during the summer months.

The fascinating converted property features a detached three-bedroom railway station, an old railway carriage, a wooden chalet and a pond, along with beautiful rural views.

There are many original station features still in place at the house with two reception rooms, a beautiful garden room, and the former waiting room, which is now the sitting room, opens to the station platform.

An inner hall leads to the kitchen, a bathroom and the former ladies waiting room, which is now a double aspect second bedroom with a central fireplace.

The former ticket office, now a dual aspect principal bedroom with a built-in wardrobe, adjoins the sitting room with the ticket hatch still in place.

The one-off Exe Valley property also comes with a railway carriage with further potential - perhaps for a quirky work from home space.

Along with fabulous features, Station Halt has 6.2 acres of mature grounds and gardens.

Stunning seating areas surround the house including the original station platform with its wooden covered seating.

But there is no chance of trainspotting as the original railway track has been removed and replaced with lawn.

Instead the large pond with flora and fauna makes this a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), plus there are meadow areas and rewilded woodland to explore.

The online listing by Stags reads : "The grounds are a superb feature of the property; accessed either by foot along a public footpath crossing the iron footbridge over the River Exe and across the meadow, or through a private ford, which is passable by a four-wheel drive vehicle during the summer months.

"Surrounding the house are beautiful seating areas, including the original station platform with the wooden covered seating which makes a beautiful spot for outside living, along with areas of garden.

"The original railway track has been removed and is now laid to lawn, which continues along the far side of the property over a stone-built bridge to a large pond with flora and fauna present, making this a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI)."
