Inside the world of discount retailer One Below rivalling Poundland, Aldi and more

At a time when many high street stores are struggling to survive, one retailer is thriving as it faces a huge demand from customers.

One Below only launched in March 2019 but has already become a go-to for many shoppers looking to find a bargain.

And while some of even the biggest high street giants disappear from our high streets One Below owner Christopher Edwards, 37, continues to expand.

There are now 60 One Below stores across the UK, but Christopher's wife Louise Edwards says the best response to its stores has been in Merseyside.

Speaking to the ECHO ahead of the retailer's first birthday, she said: "Our best reaction has actually been in our Merseyside stores including Bootle, Kirkby, St. Helens and neighbouring stores including Widnes and Ellesmere Port with huge queues of shoppers at our openings.

"Consequently, we’re planning a new store in Liverpool city centre this spring which will be our biggest investment in Merseyside yet."

She's not wrong either. When One Below opened its Bootle store queues were so long outside, they stretched past four other stores in the shopping centre.

The stores are owned by both Christopher Edwards and his father Christopher Edwards Senior who were the founders of Poundworld before it was sold to an American company in 2015.

However, despite other budget retailers still on the high street, Louise says One Below is completely different as it offers prices even "supermarkets can't match".

She added: "No other discounter on the high street sells such a big range for £1 or less.

"We have hundreds of new products arriving every week, including special buys and clearance items.

"As it's limited stock, customers are excited to come in and bag their bargains before it goes. Our concept is unique to the high street.

"We work on low margin and high footfall and sales. We drive customers to store by special 75p promotions on products that even our closest discount competitors and supermarkets can’t match."
